In Learning Genie, children identified with an Individualized Education Program (IEP) receive special accommodations to ensure their assessments align with the mandates of the Desired Results Developmental Profile (DRDP). This guide explains how the system adapts to IEP identification and how it impacts the DRDP assessment process.
1. DRDP Mandates for IEP Children
Per the California Department of Education (CDE) and the California Department of Social Services (CDSS), all children with IEPs must be assessed using specific additional measures within the DRDP framework. These measures ensure the appropriate development areas are being observed to meet their individualized educational needs. The key measures that IEP children require are present in the Fundamental and Comprehensive DRDP views, but may be missing from the Essential view, which contains fewer measures.
2. IEP Tag in Child's Profile
When a child is marked as having an IEP in their profile’s additional attributes page, Learning Genie assigns an IEP tag to their profile thumbnail. This tag is visible on the child’s profile across the platform, enabling educators to easily identify children with special education needs and apply necessary accommodations for their DRDP assessments.

3. Framework Adjustments for IEP children
Learning Genie ensures compliance with DRDP mandates by automatically adjusting the framework when a child with an IEP is identified. The system makes sure all required measures are included in the assessment, depending on the DRDP view selected by the classroom.
a. DRDP 2015 Preschool Essential View
- Automatic Switch to Fundamental View: If the classroom is using the DRDP 2015 Preschool Essential View, the system automatically switches the IEP child’s framework to the DRDP 2015 Preschool Fundamental View.
- Reason for Switch: According to DRDP guidelines, IEP children must be observed in a broader set of measures, which are not all present in the Essential view. The Fundamental View includes the required IEP-specific measures that ensure compliance with state mandates.
- This ensures that educators are assessing IEP children using the appropriate developmental measures mandated by the DRDP.
b. DRDP 2015 Preschool Comprehensive View
- No Change Required: For classrooms using the DRDP 2015 Preschool Comprehensive View, no changes are necessary for IEP children.
- Reason: The Comprehensive View includes all measures in the DRDP curriculum, including those required by the DRDP for IEP children. As such, this framework already meets the assessment requirements for children with IEPs.
4. Streamlined Process for Rating Measures
IEP children are required to be observed on specific conditional measures, as mandated by the DRDP. These conditional measures focus on areas of development that are essential for children with IEPs and are considered mandatory for their assessment.
- For Non-IEP Children: In classrooms using either the Fundamental or Comprehensive framework, Learning Genie generates a placeholder portfolio note for non-IEP children, tagging these conditional measures. This note serves as a reminder that these measures are not required for non-IEP children but can be observed if needed.
The system also automatically assigns a Conditional rating to these measures. This rating can be adjusted by educators anytime if the measures are observed.
This automation is designed to reduce manual input for teachers while ensuring that the required measures for IEP children are fully observed and rated in accordance with DRDP mandates. By automating certain elements, Learning Genie helps teachers stay compliant with DRDP while providing flexibility for non-IEP assessments.
Note: This automation is activated upon request. If you'd like to enable it for your account, simply reach out to us, and we’ll be happy to turn it on for you.
By automating the tagging and rating process for conditional measures and ensuring that IEP children are assigned the appropriate DRDP frameworks, Learning Genie simplifies the process of managing assessments for both IEP and non-IEP children. These adjustments ensure that educators remain compliant with DRDP mandates while focusing on delivering high-quality, individualized assessments. Learning Genie’s integration of DRDP requirements allows educators to focus more on observation and less on administrative tasks, ensuring that every child’s developmental progress is accurately captured.
